About this chenille service

Chenille and moss-stitch digitizing for varsity, letterman jackets and premium apparel.

Chenille has a texture no other embroidery can match — it's why varsity letters still look right eighty years after they were invented. StichDesign digitizes chenille files that combine moss (loop) fills with chain-stitch outlines to give letters a raised, plush finish. We work in Melco, Tajima and Barudan chenille formats.

Chenille is a specialty format with its own rules

Chenille embroidery uses loop stitches (moss stitch) and chain stitches to produce raised, plush textures that flat embroidery cannot replicate. It is the classic varsity letter finish — the reason letterman jackets from the 1940s still look right today — and it requires a completely different digitizing approach than standard embroidery.

Chenille files are built as separate moss and chain elements. Moss fills produce the fuzzy, textured look on the interior of letters and shapes. Chain outlines produce clean, defined borders. The two elements are sequenced so an operator (or an automated chenille machine) knows exactly when to switch stitch types. Our digitizers build every chenille file with this discipline.

Varsity letters, monograms and mascots

The most common chenille application is varsity block letters — the tall serif or block characters familiar from letterman jackets, athletic pennants and school apparel. We digitize varsity letter sets to the classic block proportions and can match your school's or team's specific letter style from a reference image.

Mascots and crests also work in chenille, though fine detail is limited by loop-stitch resolution. Chenille excels at bold shapes, big color blocks and iconic outlines. We will flag any design elements that will not translate to loop stitch and recommend alternatives (chain outlines, flat embroidery inserts) where appropriate.

Machine compatibility

Chenille machines are their own category — Melco EMT/EMC, Tajima chenille models, and Barudan chenille heads are the industry standards. Each accepts specific file formats and each has particular quirks around loop density and chain length. Tell us the machine at order time and we will output the correct format with settings tuned for that head.

Combo files: chenille and flat embroidery together

Many varsity applications combine chenille body fills with flat embroidered detail (drop shadows, outlines, sub-letters). We build these as combination files with clearly separated stops so operators know when to move between chenille and flat production stages.
